4Is this an identity? (a + b − c )2 + (a − b + c )2 + (a − b − c )2 = 2a 2 + 2b2 + 2c 2. In Grade 8, you were introduced to yet another identity, a2 – b2 = (a + b) (a – b). This can be quite useful if it is rewritten as a2 = (a + b) (a – b) + b2. Look at the following figure. Justify the identity a2 = (a + b) (a – b) + b2 for yourself. In 750 CE, this identity was proposed by Śhrīdharāchārya as a method to quickly compute the squares of numbers. For example, 552 = (55 + 5)(55 – 5) + 52 = 60 × 50 + 25 = 3000 + 25 = 3025. Fig. 4.5

School Level Solution

On expanding the left-hand side, we get 3a^2 + 3b^2 + 3c^2 − 2ab − 2ac + 2bc, which is not equal in general to 2a^2+2b^2+2c^2. Hence the first statement is not an identity as written. The second identity follows immediately from a^2−b^2=(a+b)(a−b): a^2=(a+b)(a−b)+b^2.
